OpenLaszlo 4.0 Released

OpenLaszlo is one of the first RIA tools to allow for cross runtime deployment of web apps. Choose Flash or DHTML and build your application using LZX. It's easy to get lost in all the Apollo ferver and forget there are other great web application tools out there that are free and open source.

The war between OpenLaszlo and Flex continues... with OpenLaszlo winning hands down, in my opinion. Only because it's open source. Flex seems to be able to work across platforms a lot easier, with OpenLaszlo coming up with problems here and there. One of the disadvantages of the open source community is the branching off of many 'other' types of the same software, and we all lose the original intention of the software. This could be good or bad. At any rate, Adobe's business model with Flex still leaves much to be desired, and Sun is proving to me to be a far better company in many other respects as well.

Compared to Flex, OpenLaszlo has a smaller set of built-in components and many components are not supported. Also, the non-Flash/DHTML support is still a touch sketchy (no official IE support). Talking about FREE, Flex used to be for some fee but now that it’s FREE, OpenLaszlo must work harder to show that it’s far better.
