Web RPG's

I'm starting a new side-blog called Web RPGs.
It'll be located here: http://webrpg.blogspot.com/.
I'm posting here to petition readers of this blog to send me links to any web-based
rpg's that you play or know about. I plan to write up descriptions and reviews
of as many web based rpgs that I can find, as I really enjoy games like this. So, send me your favorite web rpgs urls! Email me at triptych at gmail dot com.

Mythos: MMO from the Creators of Fate!

I stumbled across this this morning in one of my forums. The amazing creator of Fate has moved to Flashship Studios and is working on a casual MMO. Visit the site to sign up for the beta and check out the screenshots. Excellent!

Edit: I guess it would help to add the link...

Myth-Weavers - play by post rpg

I found this site after poking around m3mnoch's Jaiku site. It's a play by post RPG that is easy to get into quickly without a lot of hassle.

From the site:

Myth-Weavers is a tightly-knit role playing community for running play by post games from numerous game systems, most popularly Dungeons & Dragons. If you'd like to browse the site, our forum index offers a brief overview of our discussion and gaming sections, and the RPG Tools menu lists our role playing resources. If you would like to participate in our quickly growing community of hundreds of active members and many active games, and use our online character sheets you'll have to register -- it's fast, simple, and absolutely free!

Foobar the Bazbarian in Apollo (and Laszlo)

I have revived an ancient javascript game I wrote back in 1997 called Foobar the Bazbarian. I managed to find an old copy of the game on some page archive and I rewrote it in Laszlo back in 2003. Today I found that old code and fixed the Laszlo syntax errors (the language has changed alot since I wrote it) and managed to get an Apollo version of the game working. So, here in 2007 you have a first. A game written in 1997 ported in 2003 to Laszlo running under Apollo. Just like back then, when this was one of the very first javascript games, Foobar gets to be one of the very first Apollo games. Check it out. It sucks! But it shows that you can link together lots of ancient technology to still create something kinda cool. If you die in the game you just have to quit and restart, sorry.

Roguelike Games Overview from Retro Remakes

From the site:
This is an informal history of a special genre of games, the roguelike game. Those of you unfamiliar with the term may be asking, “what is a roguelike game?” Well, it’s a game that’s like Rogue. More specifically, it’s a game whose gameplay and presentation are similar to the game Rogue. Opinions vary on what exactly constitutes a roguelike, but at its heart it is a roleplaying game (RPG). This means it’s a game where you create an alter ego and send them on quests through an imaginary world. Characters are typically defined in both RPGs and roguelikes by three basic sets of traits: attributes, race, and class.

The Big Idea

Generally, it's not that great of an idea to talk at length about your own projects. Why? Because that's usually all that 80% of the folks who try to create games and things do. They spend hours chatting about how this game will have that feature, or be somehow different from all the other games. They completely overlook the fact that building stuff is hard. Building something someone else would actually want to use is even harder. And on top of that building something that captures the imagination and sucks people in is hardest of all. You can't go to the 7-11 and buy a community for your games/ideas. You have to slowly build that up via establishing trust with your users.

So, for me to go into great length about one of my personal projects is kinda hard to do. On one hand I'd love to sit here and chat about all the ideas and features I want to put into this. One the other I'd rather show - not tell.

So instead I'll just give you the 30 second version. I'm working on a way to combine the ease of creating an RPG of something like RPGMaker with the distribution network of something like Youtube or Flickr. I love to play RPG's and I dont believe that there are nearly enough of them out there :) So, I want to allow someone who doesnt want to invest a lot of time downloading software and figuring out complex languages to create a fun little RPG. I also have other plans but it's not worth talking about them until I can get this idea off the ground. Will it become more than just vaporware on a blog post? I dont know - but I know I'm going to try.
